OVU Defeats Glenville in Senior Day Doubleheader

Today was a day to make memories for OVU Fighting Scot Seniors Michael Shepherd, Tyler Wharton, Chris McIntyre and Matt Sheets as the Fighting Scots defeated Glenville State College in both games of their final games of the season. OVU started the day by honoring their seniors for all that they have accomplished as a part of the Fighting Scots team. Then the team honored their seniors by defeating Glenville 2-1 and 9-8. In game one of the day Chris McIntyre took the mound for the Fighting Scots. McIntyre pitched all seven innings for OVU giving up only 6 hits, 2 walks, and 1 run. Seniors Tyler Wharton and Michael Shepherd each had a hit in the game and Wharton hit in the first run for OVU. Michael Shepherd came up with a huge diving play in the top of the 5th to end the inning and keep the Pioneers from scoring. In a close battle between the pitchers the Fighting Scots came out on top. In game two of the day Tyler Wharton took the mound for OVU. He pitched all seven innings for the Fighting Scots battling through to the end for the bottom of the seventh win. Glenville jumped to an early lead in the first inning taking a 2-0 lead. OVU jumped on the bats in the bottom of the second to score seven runs including four on a grand slam by Logan Dan and a walk off home run by Wes Hatfield. The Pioneers tied the game then took a one run lead in the top of the sixth inning, but OVU would quickly answer back. Senior, Tyler Wharton singled to left field to bat in the tying run. In the bottom of the seventh with the game on the line OVU was able to pull out the win. Mason Rine singled to right field was advanced by a SAC bunt by Cody Morris and then batted in by a single to rightfield by Wes Hatfield. It was a great ending to the season for the Fighting Scots.

OVU Splits with Alderson-Broaddus

The OVU Baseball team has struggled to put together good pitching and hitting in the same game, however today the team showed that they are capable of doing both to make for a great game. OVU faced the Alderson-Broaddus Battlers in a doubleheader at Bennett-Stump Field. OVU split with the Battlers in two close games. In game one the Battlers came out to take an early 1-0 lead in the first inning as Andrew Sellers struggled to find his stride on the mound walking a few batters. The OVU defense stepped up making some great plays to help end the half inning. Sellers found his rhythm and was able to come back to pitch some great innings keeping the Battlers to only two hits in the game. OVU tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Perna led off with a double to left field. Hugo Olivares came up next and placed a great sacrifice bunt down to advance Perna to third. Logan Dan then singled to left field to drive in Perna and tie the game up at 1-1. In the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied the Fighting Scots knew this was their chance for the win. With two outs, Hugo Olivares was patient at the plate and turned a 3-2 count into a walk. Logan Dan was up next and he doubled down the left field line. Olivares speed was able to bring him all the way around and score the winning run giving the Fighting Scots a final score of 2-1. In game two of today’s doubleheader the Fighting Scots got down early again as the Battlers took a 1-0 lead in the first inning after hitting two doubles. OVU came back with a big inning in the bottom of the fourth with five hits and five runs to take a 5-4 lead over the Battlers. Alderson-Broaddus came back quickly though in the top of the fifth scoring three more runs with two home runs to take a 7-5 lead. OVU made a great attempt to come back scoring a run in the bottom of the sixth, but would fall just short losing the game 7-6. The Fighting Scots play again at home on Friday, April 19th against the University of Charleston.

OVU vs. Davis & Elkins College Game 1

The OVU baseball team hosted the Senators of Davis & Elkins college in tonight’s 9 inning game. The scots entered the game with an overall record of 3-21, while Davis & Elkins has an even overall record of 12-12.
The Scots were first score in the game after lead off hitter Michael Shepherd reached on 4 straight balls and eventually made his way around the bases to score for OVU. However the Senators, were quick to respond. They returned to hit in the second inning and scored 5 very quick runs putting them ahead of the Scots 5-1, which was a lead that that the Senators continued to build on.
OVU’s new fielding line up proved to work well for the Scots, however, they were unable to regain the lead and eventually fell to Davis & Elkins by a final score of 12-3.
OVU’s Marlon Belmas was awarded player of the match for OVU after making several plays in the field, scoring two runs, and going 2 for 4 at bat with a double and Single.

OVU vs Shepherd Recap 4-2-13

Ohio Valley and Shepherd University played in a WVIAC doubleheader at Bennett-Stump Field in Parkersburg, WV today. OVU would fall to the Rams in both game losing the first 17-2 and the second 12-5. In game one of the doubleheader OVU pitchers struggled in the pitch placement as the Rams were able to gain 16 hits from 6 different OVU pitchers including four homeruns. OVU fell to a 6-0 deficit after the first inning of play when the Rams hit two three-run homeruns. Shepherd pitcher, Hvosdovic found his mark giving up only 1 hit in his four innings pitched to OVU, a single from leadoff hitter Michael Shepherd at his first at bat. Shepherd would go on to connect for a hit once more in the bottom of the sixth to make him 2 for 3 in the game. Donavon Martin, Jr. would come in to hit in the bottom of the sixth for catcher Cody Morris, and placed a well hit ball down the third base line for a double scoring the only two runs for the Fighting Scots in the game. In game two of the today’s doubleheader the Fighting Scots were looking to battle back against the Rams. Eric Schweitzer took the mound for OVU and retired the first three batters in quick succession. OVU would then take the early lead in the bottom of the first, scoring Michael Shepherd off a single by Cody Morris. OVU would go on to score three more runs in the bottom of the second on a couple of well-placed doubles by Marlon Bellmas and Justin Gil. Gil would score two runs for OVU in the game and batted 2 for 3 with an RBI. Shepherd, however, would quickly answer each of OVU’s runs and surpass them as they had six hits in the bottom of the 3rd inning including a homerun and three doubles to take a 5-4 lead. The Rams would go on to score seven more in the game as they defeated the Fighting Scots 12-5. OVU will play again on Friday against Davis and Elkins looking to gain their first conference win of the season.

OVU Gets Swept By Bluefield State in the Three Game Series

Ohio Valley University and the Big Blues of Bluefield State College face each other in a doubleheader at Bennett Stump Field to finish games two and three of their three game WVIAC series. Bluefield State College came out on top again today sweeping OVU 3-0 on the weekend. Chris McIntyre started on the mound for OVU making his fourth start of the season for the Fighting Scots as the Big Blues started J.C. Pennington. McIntyre and Pennington both looked solid on the mound their respective teams. McIntyre walked the first batter, catcher Kyle Blocker in the third inning giving BSC a runner. Haggerty hit a nice sacrifice bunt to move the runner who then gained third on a ground out by Williams. The next ball slipped away from McIntyre hitting BSC’s Davis. The Scots allowed Davis to take second on a uncontested stolen base placing runners on 2nd and 3rd. A base hit by Willie Yates scored the first two runs of the game giving Bluefield a 2-0 lead. In the bottom of the third for the Scots, Chris Perna battled to a 3 and 2 count and made it safely to second base after a throwing error by the short stop eluded the first baseman. Perna advanced to third on a wild pitch placing a runner in scoring position for the Scots. Marlon Bellmas singled to right field with two outs to score Perna for OVUs first run of the game bringing the score to 2-1 in favor of BSC. McIntyre retired the side-three up three down- through the 4th, 5th, and 6th inning. The Fighting Scots had chances in the 5th to score but were shut down by the Big Blues defense. In the 6th, Morris singled down the left field line with one out. Mason Rine was hit by a pitch to put two runners on for the Scots. Hugo Olivares came to the plate next and hit into a fielder’s choice. The speed of Olivares saved OVU from being caught in a double play and ending the inning. First baseman, Dunn, bobbled the ball away allowing Morris to score for OVU tying the game 2-2. The seventh inning would decide the game for the Fighting Scots. Ayers started the inning at bat for the Big Blues with a single to right field. Dunn would come up to bat next and hit a ball to Mike Shepherd at third base who would overthrow first allowing Dunn to reach second and Ayers to score Bluefield’s third run which would be enough for the win. OVU struggled to get out of the inning and committing two more errors allowed the Big Blues to score four total runs and lead 6-2 after the half inning. Pennington finished out the game for BSC on the mound striking out OVUs final two batters to end the game with a Bluefield State win. JR Davis got the start on the mound for the Fighting Scots. OVU allowed the Big Blues to score one in their half of the first, were able to answer back right away with a two run homerun by Tyler Wharton. Mason Rine doubled for the Scots, but was left stranded at second as Olivares fouled out to first baseman Rusty Rainey. Alex Quick started on the mound for the Big Blues. With runners on second and third in the 2nd inning, Bluefield’s Williams hit a double to right center field scoring both Bolden and Lilly making the score 3-2 in favor of the Big Blues. Williams stole third base and went for home on the slight overthrow was thrown out at home by OVU’s third baseman Tyler Wharton. OVU ended the inning as Wharton caught a fly foul ball. BSC’s Quick was able to retire the side in quick succession to end the inning. Rainey hit a leadoff double in the third for Bluefield. Laing hit a blooper to first and OVU pitcher Davis came to cover the first base bag juggling the ball a bit but getting his foot down before the runner arrived, however the field umpire called Laing safe. OVU Coach Bob Crawford came out to argue the call and was dismissed from the game by the field umpire. OVU struggled to get out of the inning as Bluefield went to score 7 runs on 6 hits and 2 OVU errors to bring the score to 10-2 at the end of the half inning. OVU looked to close the gap as they came up to bat. Gil, Wharton, and Rine each got on and loaded the bases for OVU as Olivares came to the plate. Olivares walked to bring in Gil for an OVU run. Tyler Wharton, who came in to pitch in the middle of the 3rd for OVU, pitched a one, two, three inning for the Fighting Scots in the 4th. Tyler Frazier replaced Quick on the mound for Bluefield State and was able to close out the fourth inning without event. The first half of the fifth inning ended with no runs for the Big Blues after they had loaded the bases. With OVU at the plate, Mason Rine was hit square in the back to put him on base. With two outs OVU had consecutive walks by Perna and Brown to load the bases. Michael Shepherd came to the plate and hit a high pop fly to the pitcher who dropped it for the error scoring Rine and Perna for two unearned runs for OVU. Bruno Holmann singled to right field to score Brown and bring the score for OVU to six before the inning ended. Tyler Wharton struck out two and Morris threw out Haggerty at second to end the top of the sixth. Morris, Rine, and Olivares started the bottom of the 6th for the Fighting Scots with a walks loading the bases. Bluefield brought in Alex Dunn for relief of Frazier on the mound. Trey Engle came to the plate next for OVU who was 0 for 3 in the game and was hit by a pitch scoring Morris followed by Chris Perna who was also hit by a pitch scoring Rine leaving OVU down by only two runs. Bluefield coach pulled Dunn after only three pitches in the game replacing him with Eli Nichols. With one out Shepherd hit a ball deep off the centerfield fence for an RBI single scoring Olivares. Bruno Holmann up next hit a single to shallow centerfield scoring Engle to tie the game up at 10-10. Bluefield brought in Taylor Perez to replace Nichols with the bases still loaded and one out for the Fighting Scots. Wharton hit a double to the left field fence scoring two runs for an OVU lead of 12-10. The inning ended with Perez striking out the final two batters. Lilly started off the top of the seventh with a line drive hit to left field. Wharton then walked Williams and Davis to load the bases. OVU Coach Tyler Engle made a pitching change switching Michael Shepherd with Tyler Wharton from third to pitcher. Shepherd’s first pitch was wild scoring Lilly. Yates grounded out to second base but the run scores tying the game at 12-12. Shepherd threw another wild pitch allowing Davis to come in and score the go ahead run for Bluefield. Rainey walked and Ayers had a base hit. OVU brought in Troy Hervey to pitch who faced BSC batter Blocker who hit into a 643 double play to end the half inning with Bluefield State up 13-12. OVU had no success in the bottom of the seventh after Bluefield put in pitcher, Muncy, for the save. Bluefield was able to sweep OVU winning th final game 13-12.

OVU Loses Doubleheader to UPJ in Home Opener

Vienna, WV- Ohio Valley University and the University of Pitt-Johnstown faced off in a WVIAC doubleheader today at Bennett Stump Field in Parkersburg, WV. The Mountain Cats of UPJ were able to sweep the Fighting Scots and head home with a 10-6 and 14-1 victory. In game one of the doubleheader Ohio Valley was able to tie the game up 1-1 after UPJ had scored in their half of the first inning. Marlon Bellmas doubled for the Scots and was batted in on a single by Tyler Wharton. An error by OVU pitcher Saverko kept the Mountain Cats alive in the second to score two more runs after a single to left field dropped in from of Hollman in left field. The Fighting Scots would battle back in the third. With one out in the inning Michael Shepherd doubled to left field. Tyler Wharton came to the plate and singled to left center to bring in Shepherd for another RBI. Catcher Cody Morris came up to bat next and hit a homerun to deep left field hitting the roof of the house across the street from the ball park scoring 2 RBIS to take a 4-3 lead for the Fighting Scots. Mason Rine came to the plate next for the Scots and followed Morris with his first career home run for the Fighting Scots to bring the score to 5-3 OVU. Saverko pitched a great 4th and 5th inning for the Fighting Scots keeping the Mountain Cats from scoring any runs. In the 6th he started to struggle just a bit and gave up a 3 run homerun to #24 McGee who replaced UPJ’s catcher K. Morrow which turned the lead over to the Mountain Cats at 6-5. OVU’s Chris McIntyre came in to close out the inning and remain in the game for the Fighting Scots. Hugo Olivares got a leadoff double in the bottom of the 6th for OVU. Chris Perna came in to pinch hit for the Scots and laid down a perfect sac bunt to advance Olivares to third. Designated hitter, Logan Dan came to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to center field scoring Olivares for and RBI and tying the game 6-6. UPJ would not be silent in the seventh inning. The Mountain Cats came out of the inning with 6 hits including doubles from Negri, Barbera, and Warner. The team drove in four runs to take a 10-6 lead over the Fighting Scots that would stick and give them the win. McIntyre drew the loss for the Fighting Scots. In game two of the doubleheader UPJ jumped to a lead right away on an inning one leadoff homerun by second baseman J. Warner. The game remained scoreless from there with several three up three down innings from both teams until the 4th inning when UPJ’s Campbell would hit another homerun to bring the score to 2-0 for the Mountain Cats. OVU’s Tyler Wharton would answer back in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun of his own to bring the score to 2-1. The wind played a huge factor in carrying the ball in the games today. Once again in the 5th inning UPJs Palkovitz hit a 2-run homerun to bring the score up to 4-1. OVU made a run of their own in the bottom of the 5th with singles from Olivares, Engle, and Gil loading the bases with two outs and Michael Shepherd coming to the plate. Shepherd hit a long hard ball to left center but UPJ’s Vignero made a nice running catch to save the Scots from scoring several runs and ending the inning. Relief pitchers struggled to close out the game for the Fighting Scots and UPJ managed to score 10 more runs in the 6th and 7th innings to bring a final score of 14-1 for the Mountain Cats. Tyler Wharton led the Fighting Scots at the plate going 3 for 7 with 2 singles and a homerun. He scored 2 runs and hit in 3 RBIs. Cody Morris went 2 for 5 with a single a homerun and 2 walks. He scored 1 run and hit in 2 RBIs.
