VIENNA, W.Va. – Ohio Valley University, under the direction of second-year head lacrosse coach Corey Struss, has welcomed 13 new Fighting Scots to campus this fall.
The class of 2017 embodies 12 freshmen and one transfer, all of whom will look to play a part in the program’s mission to win the Eastern College Athletic Conference. The class features student-athletes from six states and two Canadian provinces.
“This is a very versatile class that has known success for a long time. We have guys who can step into certain roles whenever needed, and they are ready to do whatever it takes to see the field,” said Coach Struss. “This kind of depth is really going to push our guys and our program to the next level. I can’t wait to get started this fall.”
M – Adam Dickson (White Rock, British Columbia/New Westminster) is one of two newcomers from British Columbia. He helped the Salmon Bellies capture two Provincial Championships during his tenure. Adam was an Intermediate A captain with a 50 plus point season for New West, receiving multiple MVP’s and the Minor graduating player of the year.
M – Jacob Schoenfeld (Imperial Beach, Ca./Mar Vista) was a two-time All-Metro Conference selection. A four-year varsity letter at Mar Vista and a three-year team captain, Jake had career totals of over 150 points and 100 ground balls. A product of the Shooterz Lacrosse Club Team, he lead the team as a captain his senior year.
M – Caleb McCurtis (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield) is the first player from West Bloomfield High school to be honored to play NCAA lacrosse. He totaled 23 goals in his high school career and garnered All-Conference honors his senior year. The converted football player will have the athleticism and strengthen at the midfield position to bolster his abilities on both sides of the field.
LSM – Chase Neibert (Chula Vista, Ca./Hilltop) A four-year varsity starter for Hilltop at multiple positions. He played midfield and LSM his senior year, registering over 42 points (35 goals, seven assists). He played for Shooterz lacrosse club and led the team as a captain.
D – Oliver Stoudt (Spring Township, Penn./Wilson) is the first Wilson lacrosse player to join a Division II lacrosse program. A second team All-Berks County selection his senior year, he moved to close D his junior year. He was selected for the Keystone State games for Berks County in his final season.
G – Alex Naftal (Bellmore, N.Y./Young Harris College) comes to Ohio Valley as a transfer from Young Harris College. As a Mountain Lion, he played in seven games with a GAA: 9.42 and Save %: .500. A three-year letter winner at JFK High School he earned All-Conference as a senior and named team MVP leading his team to the playoffs. He was awarded the Dave Leistman Scholarship Award selected by the Nassau County Coaches Association. Alex recently played club lacrosse for the New York Skulls in Amsterdam.
A – Shane Thompson (Charlottesville, Va./University) recently played in the Champion All-American Showcase as an All-American. Shane played in 44 games tailing 233 points (168 goals, 65 assists). He was selected to the Second Team All-State team his junior year and first team his senior year. During his three years at University he helped lead them to two State Championships. He spent his club years as a part of the Pittsburgh Revolution.
M- Christopher Rock (Charleston, W.Va./Herbert Hoover) was a two year varsity player. He played in two straight State All-Star Games during his junior and senior year.
A - Brennan Stothers (Shawnigan Lake, British Colombia/Claremont) comes to Ohio Valley as another hybrid box and field lacrosse product. He was a major cog for the Intermediate A Shamrocks in Victoria, B.C. He won the Provincial MVP his freshman year. He recently finished a stint for the Junior A. Nanaimo Timbermen.
G – Nathaniel Austin (Glens Falls, N.Y./Glens Falls) was a three-year varsity starter for Glens Falls. He helped led the team to three Sectional Championships. Throughout his career he improved his saves and clears by 30%. Nate was a team leader and was a team captain his senior year.
D – Kyle Joint (Erie, Penn./Cathedral Prep) joins the Ohio Valley defense after a stellar high school career. He was selected to the first D-10 his junior year and second team his senior year. Kyle played club ball for True Lacrosse and the Erie Stags. He was a True Pittsburgh Showcase All-Star Team. M – Christian Huffman (Charleston, W.Va./Capital) is a dual sport athlete, as he competes for the OVU soccer team in the fall. He was a three-year starter for Capital. He was selected to the State All-Star game in 2012 & 2013 and registered 3 goals in the ’13 game.
M/face-off – Bryce Watson (Oshawa, Ontario/Holy Trinity Catholic) recently competed in the All-Canada South East Championship. He ranked top five in faceoff midfielders in Ontario. During his senior year he had 20 points (12 goals, 8 assists) and held an 86% at face-off. Bryce has been a member of Edge lacrosse, 3D Lacrosse, and the Oshawa Blue Knights. Ohio Valley University’s lacrosse team is a proud member of the Eastern College Athletic Conference and competes in the NCAA Division II.
