OVU Women Defeat WV State in Double Overtime
|
|
The OVU Women’s basketball team pulled off an impressive win tonight after beating WV State University in double overtime 70-69.
The Fighting Scots took the court looking for a win after falling to the Yellow Jackets earlier in the season. On the road at WV State, OVU struggled to score and found difficulty making defensive stops. However tonight was a different story. The Scots built a lead from the beginning of the game, extending their lead to 11 points at the half with a 34-23 point lead.
Full court pressure by the Yellow Jackets caused OVU to turn the ball over in crucial periods of the game, which allowed WV State to climb back to tie the game at the end of regulation play. Foul trouble plagued OVU’s post players, which force the Scots to play a small line-up. At which point Saira House found success attacking the basket and connecting on several occasions.
OVU gained possession of the ball with one final chance looming as they were down by three points with 6.8 seconds remaining in over-time. Coach Wadlington called a time out and drew up a play that opened Danielle Dunnagun for the successful game-tying three point shot which pushed the game into double-overtime.
Both teams had lost several players due to being fouled out, but continued to fight to the last possession. Double over-time saw OVU open up an early lead as Shelby Way was fouled shooting a three point shot and sank all three of her free throws, followed by another three points when Amy Brooks connected on her attempt from behind the arc. WV State answered back with three of their own points and eventually took the lead by 1 point, however the Fighting Scots didn’t back down and eventually took the game by 1 point with a score of 70-69.
Shelby Way led the Scots in scoring with 14 points and 7 assists, followed closely by Jasmine Gibson and Kayla Parsley who both added 12 points, Saira House and Amy Brooks contributed 11 and 10 points respectively. Strong defensive efforts came from several Fighting Scots in their Win.

|
|
The OVU women’s basketball team lost a close game against Alderson-Broaddus College. At the end of regulation game time, the Battlers had escaped with a narrow 63-59 point win.
The Fighting Scots struggled to score in the opening minutes of the game and had posted just five points in the first ten minutes of play. Down by double digits early in the half, OVU went on a run that brought them back to within 2 points of the lead at the half, when they were down 29-27 at the break. Transition 3 point baskets continued to be problematic for the Scots.
The second half started in similar fashion to the first, with the Battlers scoring points while OVU struggled to put the ball in the hoop. Ohio Valley was unable to convert on the offensive end of the court down the stretch and dropped the game 63-59.

OVU Women vs Charleston 2-2-13
|
|
The OVU Women’s basketball team hosted the Golden Eagles from the University of Charleston in the team’s second meeting of the season. In the game earlier this season, Charleston won by 10 points in their home facility after OVU managed to keep the game tied up for the majority of playing time.
The Fighting Scots expected full court pressure from Charleston in the form of a press defense. Although OVU was able to manage the press with limited turnovers, it was on their own defensive end of the court that the Fighting Scots struggled. Early in the game, Charleston made an effort to release lane runners and push for the fast-break option in which they connected on several transition 3 point shots. As OVU adjusted their defense to contain the Eagles transition game, Charleston found other opportunities to score including designed set plays that opened up the paint for easy points. OVU trailed by 9 points at the half despite shooting 40% from 3 point range and close to 47% from the field in the first half.
The second half saw each team making small runs to improve their score differential. However, the general point spread remained close to 10 points in favor of the Golden Eagles. The closest OVU got to Charleston was 7 points with close to 8 minutes left to play, which was quickly opened up to a 13 point deficit after Charleston’s Chelsea Brumby and Jessi Cowden hit a pair of 3-balls. Unable to rally back, the Fighting Scots lost the defensive battle 89-77.
OVU shot 48% from the field, while shooting 47% from 3 point land on the game. Despite shooting well, it was the Scots defense that saw them being out rebounded by Charleston losing the battle of the boards by a margin of 46-36 including 20 Charleston offensive rebounds.
Kayla Parsley paced the Scots on offense with 22 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Jasmine Gibson who notched 12 points in 13 minutes of playing time. Shelby Way and Amy Brooks both had 11 points in the loss.
OVU will be on the road playing WVIAC opponent West Liberty University on Monday.

OVU found scoring opportunities in the form of 2 on 1 breaks after beating the Pioneer press. The Fighting Scots found themselves down by just 5 points at the half-time break after their aggressive man-to-man defense held the Pioneers to 48-43 at the break.
Glenville started the second half with a 12-2 run that continued to build momentum, eventually helping them to gain a 20 points lead mid-way through the second period. In true Glenville State fashion, successful three point attempts on consecutive trips down the court plagued OVU.
