Advisor Responsibilities
|
- Become thoroughly familiar with the educational programs and academic requirements of the institution;
- Provide accurate information about academic options, requirements, policies, and procedures;
- Help students clarify their goals;
- Focus on advisees' strengths and potentials rather than limitations;
- Help students understand the nature and purpose of higher education;
- Help students plan an educational program consistent with the students' interests and abilities;
- Determine the reason for poor performance and direct advisees to appropriate support services;
- Assist students in choosing courses that satisfy program requirements;
- In the respective academic area, provide career information and career planning resources;
- Understand and inform students of academic policies;
- Inform students of any new courses that may apply to their programs;
- Maintain an up-to-date summary of courses taken;
- Maintain a record of advisee visits, indicating the purpose of the visit and the recommendation made;
- Be available to meet with advisees;
- Personally assists advisees in the registration of courses for the upcoming semester/term;
- Periodically attend advising meetings and training sessions and utilize advising resources available;
- Evaluate the student's academic record for graduation, checking each semester to see which required courses have been successfully completed.
