Intensive English Program Curriculum
1st Semester
ESL 71 - English Speaking and Pronunciation (4 hours) Focus on improving spoken communication of the English language through oral instruction and practice as well as instruction in how to decode common spelling patterns, how to stress syllables and words, become more familiar with the English alphabet, and practice intonation and rhythm.
ESL 75 - English Reading (3 hours) Instruction and practice in reading and studying text, including understanding the nature of reading, reading for specific purposes, and comprehension.
ESL 80- English Writing (3 hours) Concentration on word formation, spelling, and syntax necessary to correctly use the English language to read, speak, listen, and write.
ESL 95- English Listening (3 hours) Students will learn to recognize and use the stress, rhythm, and intonation patterns of English. As a part of this course, students will meet weekly with a conversation partner in order to enhance their listening skills.
ESL 85- English Grammar (3 hours) Instruction and practice in learning the correct usage of all parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, and the like.
2nd Semester
ESL 72- English Speaking and Pronunciation II (4 hours) Continued focus on improving spoken communication of the English language through oral instruction and practice as well as instruction in how to decode common spelling patterns, how to stress syllables and words, become more familiar with the English alphabet, and practice intonation and rhythm.
ESL 76- English Reading II (3 hours) Continued instruction and practice in reading and studying text, including understanding the nature of reading, reading for specific purposes, and comprehension.
ESL 86- English Grammar II (3 hours) Continued instruction and practice in learning the correct usage of all parts of speech, including nouns, verbs, prepositions, adjectives, adverbs, and the like.
ESL 99- American Culture (3 hours) Promotion of the understanding of American culture through the study of American history, language, customs, and institutions. In connection with this course, students will take a variety of field trips to both local and national sites of interest.
ESL 81- English Writing II (3 hours) A continued concentration on word formation, spelling, and syntax necessary to correctly use the English language to read, speak, listen, and write.
