Why John chose OVU: I felt that the small school atmosphere at OVU was the perfect fit for myself. I didn't want to be drowned by huge class sizes and too many people everyday. OVU was the right place for me.
High School/Previous: John was the High School Sports Catcher of the Year his Sophmore, Junior, and Senior year while attending Xaverian high school in Brooklyn, New York. He led the Clippers to the CHSAA city championship in 2001-2002. Ortiz went to Frederick Community College where he played two years and led the Cougars to the Division II Junior College World Series in Millington, Tennessee, where they finished 6th in the nation. John is the son of Juan F. and Yolanda Ortiz.
