Fighting Scots Win Thriller to Start the Season

Vienna, WV (August 30, 2008) - The Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University opened the 2008-09 soccer season with a home match against the Lake Erie College Storm.  This would be the first opportunity to see what this year's squad would be capable of achieving.  With both teams trying to find a weakness to exploit, it would prove to be the Fighting Scots that would strike first.  A nice through ball from Ohio Valley's Roberto Jofra (SO-Miami, FL) to teammate Alan Porter (JR-Marietta, OH) would give the young Scots the early lead at the 41:18 mark of the first half.  The teams went into the half with OVU up 1-0.

The second half would begin the same as the first half with both teams working hard and trying to establish an offensive rhythm.  Lake Erie finally found an answer to the Scots defense with an unassisted goal at the 85:17 mark by Scott Stuckey (SO-Avon Lake, OH).  This late goal would ultimately send the game into overtime.

It didn't take long to determine a winner when OVU's Roberto Jofra just 2:33 into the first overtime period would send in a shot that the Lake Erie keeper deflected to a waiting Nick Pecarski (SO-Windsor, Ontario, Canada) who would score the game-winning goal.

Ohio Valley had a 10-7 margin in shots with OVU holding the edge 7-5 for shots on goal.  Corner kicks were close with OVU having a 6-3 advantage.  OVU committed 18 fouls to 8 by Lake Erie College.

The young Fighting Scots will return to action with an early season WVIAC match at Wheeling Jesuit University on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 at 6 pm.
