Fighting Scots stunned in WVIAC opener

Athens, WV (September 17, 2009) - A very tight contest was played today between the Mountain Lions of Concord University and the Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University.  The teams would head to halftime notted up in a 0-0 tie.

The action would definitely heat up in the second half with both sides fighting hard for the valuable 3 points to be gained.  Alex Ross (FR-Cross Lanes, WV) would score his second goal of the season from a nice pass from Nick Pecarski (JR-Windsor, Canada) on a 2v1 breakaway.  Disaster would strike the Scots when Danny D'Amore (JR-Windsor, Canada) was ejected from the game at the 67:06 mark.  This foul envigorated the Concord side and, with the man advantage, allowed them to apply constant pressure to the OVU defense.  Their pressure finally won through when Zach Piecarski was able to head home a long throw-in from Scotty Funston to tie the game.  A wayward corner kick by Ohio Valley sent Concord on a 3-0 breakaway in which Varney Vincent was able to beat Kelly Diaz (SO-Palisades Park, NJ) near post for the game winner at 88:52.

Concord held a 17-9 margin in total shots and a 7-4 mark in shots on goal.  OVU was called for 13 fouls and Concord had 10.  Corner kicks favored Concord by a 6-1 margin.

The Scots (1-7-0, 0-1-0) look to recover from this heart wrenching loss when they host WVIAC foe Salem Internationl University (0-3-0) for a double header action on Tuesday, September 22, 2009.
