Fighting Scots Win Thriller to Start the Season

Vienna, WV (August 27, 2009) - The Fighting Scots of Ohio Valley University opened the 2008-09 soccer season with a home match against the Cougars of Mountain State University.  This game would prove to be a hard fought contest that would see numerous yellow cards and hard fouls throughout the match.

Ohio Valley would be the first to score in the 6:04 mark of the first half when Nick Pecarski (JR-Windsor, Canada) would make a nice pass off a free kick to Isaac Judd (FR-Cross Lanes, WV).  This would be Isaac's first collegiate goal.  But, Mountain State responded with the equalizier when Luis Mattei (FR-Brazil) found the back of the net on an unassisted goal at the 33:39 mark of the first half.  The tie score would hold up as both teams headed to halftime.

The second half would see more of the same as the teams were looking to find that elusive game winning goal.  Several good chances where thwarted by both teams until the Fighting Scots' Alex Ross (FR-Cross Lanes, WV) would score his first goal by burying a penalty kick off the left post with 3:34 left in the match.  This would prove to be the game winner.

Ohio Valley had a 15-11 margin in total shots with MSU holding the edge 9-6 for shots on goal. Corner kicks were overwhelmingly in the Cougars favor by a whopping 8-1 margin. OVU committed 7 fouls to 17 by Mountain State University.

The Fighting Scots will return to action with an early season regional match at PSAC champions California University - PA on Saturday, August 29, 2009.
