Pat Sole is in his first year as the head wrestling coach of the OVU Fighting Scots wrestling squad in their inaugural season. Sole no stranger to the sport has been instrumental in helping establish the OVU squad. He looks to use the experience and success he has had with previous schools to slowly progress OVU wrestling into a very competitive NCAA Division II program.
Sole is very blessed to have the opportunity to share his faith and coach other young athletes at this level. His intentions are to develop each wrestler to their collegiate potential as an athlete, academically and spiritually.
Prior to coming to OVU Sole assisted in returning his Alma Mater Liberty University back to NCAA Division I status. While there they captured three NCAA East Regional Titles and qualified 14 wrestlers to the NCAA Final National Championships.
Preceding Sole's return to Liberty University he coached at his Alma Mater, Parkersburg South High School in Parkersburg, WV. In the 18 years at Parkersburg South he helped assist the patriots to 13 State Campionships and 3 runner-up places. During that time five of those teams were nationally ranked. Individually, he coached seven high school All Americans. Eleven wrestlers went on to compete at Division I schools and 2 NAIA schools.
As a competitor, Sole was a high school All American at Parkersburg South, capturing the State title twice and finishing as a runner up once. He was a 1978 Junior World Champion and a member of the 1978 USA Junior World team, while placing four times nationally in Freestyle and Greco Wrestling. He represented the USA in Russia, Poland, and a few other European countries while on the US Junior World team. In college Sole wrestled under head coach Bob Bonheim at Liberty University. While there he was a National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) All American, 1980 Olympic Trials Regional champion, National Olympic Trials final place winner, qualifying him as an alternate for the 1980 Olympic team. He also served as co-captain his junior and senior years while wrestling for the Flames.
Pat and his wife Vickie have two sons Dustin and Cody.
