VIENNA, WV – Ohio Valley University alumnus Michael Giannamore has been named head men’s golf coach at his alma mater.
Giannamore is a 2009 graduate of the university, having completed a bachelor’s degree in health and wellness with a minor in coaching. He played baseball for three years under OVU head baseball coach Bob Crawford after transferring from Wheeling Jesuit University. Giannamore also received a bachelor of science in accounting from OVU.
“I could not have been more pleased when I heard that Mike wanted to interview for the position,” OVU Athletic Director Dennis Cox noted. “He has proven himself many times over at OVU both as a student-athlete and as a coach.”
Giannamore has served as a volunteer assistant coach with the Lady Scots softball team for three seasons under Coach Rob Graham. He is originally from Steubenville, Ohio, and is a graduate of Steubenville High School. He was named “most valuable player” on both his high school baseball and golf teams his junior and senior seasons.
“I have always thought of myself as a golfer and continue to remain competitive in the game,” Giannamore said. “Playing college golf was an option I considered. So I am very happy and comfortable going into coaching college golf.”
Coach Giannamore will have his work cut out for him as he takes over what has been the Fighting Scots’ most successful athletic program since the university joined the NCAA, Division II and the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference nearly a decade ago.
“That’s what excites me about coaching this program,” Giannamore added. “I want to do everything I can to maintain that winning tradition in OVU men’s golf.”
Ohio Valley University is a proud member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and competes in the NCAA Division II in men's baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, lacrosse, soccer and wrestling, as well as women's basketball, golf, cross country, softball, soccer and volleyball.
