How to Get the Best Deals on College Textbooks
PREORDER BOOKS THROUGH THE OVU BOOKSTORE
There are many benefits to ordering through the college bookstore. While you might not get the cheapest price, there are several guarantees: 1) You are guaranteed to get the right version of the books for your classes. 2) You won’t have to worry about not having a book when classes begin 3) You don’t have to pay for books until you pick them up 4) If the textbook changes, the bookstore will automatically order the proper book.
Pre-orders received by August 5 will receive a 10% discount off the list price, but the student must take ALL of the books that were pre-ordered. Books ordered between August 5 and the last day to register (August 30) can be ordered at full price. Orders made after this final registration date will require pre-payment. Unless part of a pre-order package, returned books may be subject to a restocking fee.
Students can pay with Visa, MasterCard, Discover, cash or check.
Check with the Business office to see if you are eligible for a voucher through excess loan funds.
ORDER YOUR BOOKS ONLINE
Online orders are quick and easy and often offer discounts and free shipping. Shipping is fairly quick…so you should have your books in time for the first day of class if you place your order one to two weeks prior to classes.
(Be sure to order all technology materials that are required as well).
Some resources for ordering books online include:
www.amazon.com
With Amazon, books will be discounted (about 20-25%) and you may be eligible for free shipping. Also, consider “Amazon Student” - a free membership program created especially for college students. Members receive benefits such as a full year of FREE 2-Day Shipping with Amazon Prime, and e-mail alerts for discounts and promotions.
Other online sellers include:
www.academicsuperstore.com
www.campusBooks.com
www.textbooks.Com
DO YOUR OWN PERSONAL BARGAIN HUNTING
Put the title or ISBN number of the text in the GOOGLE search bar, and explore the best deals. Caution: Always check the version before ordering. Older versions of the same book may not be the same as the current issue. Also, if you purchase from an individual rather than a marketplace seller, you run the risk of not receiving your book on time. While this may be the cheapest way to go…you run the risk of delays, so order early!!!
RENT YOUR BOOKS
Try www.chegg.com
www.collegebookrenter.com
or other sites for rentals and sales of used books.

College Textbooks Myth Busters
College textbooks are expensive: Unfortunately we cannot “bust” this one…college textbooks ARE expensive!!!
College textbooks are a waste of money: College Textbooks are required…as is gas to run your car or a charged battery to run your phone. If you want to drive…you need gas…if you want to get a college degree…you need textbooks.
If my professor does not assign work from a textbook…it is not being used: Instructors are not required to use a textbook and may use other materials instead. If a textbook is listed with the bookstore, it is required! While there may not be a written assignment, your instructor is expecting you to read the text. Tests, classroom discussions and papers may be based on the materials in the text. But most importantly, the information in the textbook is what your instructor thinks you need to know and understand to master the objectives of the course.
I can save money by not buying the book: Will you really save money if you pay $1500 for a class and fail it because you will not pay $125 for a textbook??!!
