2006-07 YEAR IN REVIEW: Campus Highlights & Accomplishments

Ohio Valley University
  • Ohio Valley University hosted College Summit as part of a major national initiative to improve college enrollment and ensure college success among West Virginia students.
  • Assistant Professor of Mathematics, Angela Morgan, was the first recipient of the annual President’s Innovation Award presented during the university’s fall workshop.
  • The OVU Learning Clinic was launched, offering low cost tutoring services to students in Wood, Pleasants and Wirt Counties in West Virginia, and Washington County, Ohio. Dr. Mary Ann Thorn was appointed director.
  • Ohio Valley University was ranked in U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best Colleges Guide for 2007 as one of the best comprehensive bachelor’s colleges in the nation.
  • The OVU athletics program signed branding contracts with Adidas, Dixie Sporting Goods and New Balance.
  • Steve Eckman was named Executive Vice President; Rebekah Mathis-Stump was named Assistant to the President; Don Robinson was named Assistant to the President for Advancement; Dr. Joy Jones was named chief financial officer.
  • OVU hosted a black tie affair for the community and honored Mr. Pat Minnite as the Mid-Ohio Valley Citizen of the Year.
  • Adjunct Professor Gerry Kohler received national recognition by the White House and was honored as the “2006 Preserve America History Teacher of the Year.”
  • Denver Lucky retired as assistant to the president, after many years of service to the institution.
  • Ohio Valley University men’s basketball team continued its “Assist to Score” community outreach program centered on the themes of sportsmanship and remaining drug and alcohol free.
  • OVU Athletics Department hosts the First Annual Halloween & Hoops and Holiday Hoops Events for the local community.
  • Dr.Robert Solomon II, assistant dean of admissions and financial aid and director of the office of minority affairs for the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in Columbus, Ohio, was selected as the 2006 OVU Alumnus of the Year.
  • The Ohio Valley University Career Center was opened to assist students with career planning, placement and job search skills. Colleen Cooper was appointed director. The Career Center also implemented the College Central Network.
  • OVU Athletics hosted fundraising events featuring baseball legends Steve & Nick Swisher and former WVU head football coach Don Nehlen.
  • Charles B. Stephenson of Lubbock, Texas and William W. Minsker of Buckhannon, West Virginia were appointed to serve on the board of trustees for Ohio Valley University.
  • The West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference recognized OVU with the Clement H. Clower Institutional Sportsmanship Memorial Award. The WVIAC peer colleges and universities recognize one institution within the conference each academic year that best exemplifies the “True Spirit of Sportsmanship.”
  • The President’s Distinguished Board of Visitor’s was established by Dr. James A. Johnson.
  • A ring ceremony was held to honor the Fighting Scots 2005-06 men’s baseball team as the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) champions.
  • The A Cappella Singers of Ohio Valley University performed with the West Virginia Symphony Orchestra in the Home for the Holidays Pops! Concert series.
  • Senior Bethany Kordella was invited to attend the fourth annual Undergraduate Research Day at the Capitol in Charleston, West Virginia.
  • Gina Rondeau became the first OVU student to blog about her travel abroad experiences while studying in Paris and England.
  • Liberty Mutual Insurance Group partnered with OVU to promote good sportsmanship awareness in the Mid-Ohio Valley as the lead sponsor in the “Good Sports” Essay and Poster Contest.
  • Thirty Information Technology Assistants earned $30,000 in grant funding from the Appalachian College Association.
  • Dr. Mary Ann Thorn, director of academic support services, successfully defended her doctoral of education dissertation from Marshall University Graduate College.
  • A spring 2007 record enrollment of 549 students was recorded, slightly surpassing the fall 2006 enrollment numbers. This total also exceeded the national average of 88% for retaining students with a 93% over-all student body retention rate.
  • OVU freshman Abby Miller was featured in Christianity Today’s Ignite Your Faith Magazine (IYF), for a winning t-shirt slogan.
  • Ohio Valley University junior Kaleb Smith took top honors at the Geneva College Forensics Invitational Tournament in Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania, qualifying him to compete in the National Forensic Association and American Forensic Association national competitions.
  • Ohio Valley University sponsored the first annual Mid-Ohio Church Leadership Conference at the Marysville Church of Christ in Marysville, Ohio.
  • Ohio Valley University Organization and Sports Management class hosted the first annual “Hoops for Hounds,” a three-on-three basketball tournament to benefit the Parkersburg Humane Society.
  • The OVU Alumni Association Partnered with Sallie Mae to Offer Loan Consolidation Benefits to its membership.
  • Veta Coger has accepted the position of Title III grant coordinator and oversees the strengthening of Ohio Valley University’s science and math curriculum.
  • Ohio Valley University hosted the 14th annual West Virginia Quiz Bowl Championship on campus for 250-300 high school students, parents, coaches..
  • The Ohio Valley University Student National Education Association Chapter won the 2007 Outstanding Chapter Award at West Virginia Student Education Association Awards, besting large public and private institutions throughout the state.
  • Ohio Valley University and West Virginia University at Parkersburg solidified a collaborative agreement regarding WVU Parkersburg’s Associate in Applied Science (A.A.S) in Nursing degree, initially allowing select OVU students into WVU Parkersburg’s nursing program, beginning with the spring 2008 semester.
  • A Professional accounting certificate program was launched, in accordance with the American Institute of Certified Public Accounts (AICPA) requirements, through the School of Business and IT, and in conjunction with the OVU College of Professional Studies. Other new academic offerings include bachelor’s of science degree in biology and a children’s ministry minor and certificate.
  • The Bernard McDonough Foundation awarded Ohio Valley University $100,000 in grants to expand its wireless Internet access throughout campus and to continue scholarship funding for middle income students.
  • The OVU Stepping Stones exceeded $4 million dollars in total giving to the university during the annual convention.
  • A Cappella Singers of Ohio Valley University released a compilation CD entitled With Heart & Voice.
