OVU Lowers Full-Time Tuition Rates for 2007-08 Academic Year

VIENNA, WV (May 30, 2007) – The cost of living in the United States may be on the rise, but one West Virginia college is looking to help add a sizeable amount of change back into its students’ pockets this fall.

Ohio Valley University, a private, faith-based, liberal arts campus located in Vienna, W.Va., recently announced its 2007-08 tuition would be less for a full-time student than in 2006-07.

“Purse strings are tight and tightening for households with children attending college or for professionals who are seeking additional degrees,” Steve Eckman, OVU executive vice president, said. “Students, as well as their parents or spouses, have to consider where they will receive the most for their investment. OVU has become more sensitive to the concerns of families and is making a real effort to make the cost of college more affordable.”

Eckman explained the university previously structured its tuition on a block price for 12-16 hours. The new tuition structure is now a base price for 12 credit hours. The tuition costs for a full-time OVU student taking 12 hours during the 2007-08 academic year is $10,998 compared to $12,750 in 2006-07.

“The restructuring places the tuition costs under $5,500 per student per semester,” Eckman noted. “The new tuition rates will better align OVU within the market and should be much more attractive to students. In fact, it places us as one of the most affordable, four-year, private, liberal arts universities in West Virginia and Christian institutions in the country.”

OVU Vice President for Enrollment Rob Dudley explained, “We have aligned our costs with the student trends in colleges and universities. College students are taking less credit hours on average. They are also lengthening their college experience to an average of 5 years and more students are working while going to college than ever before. We have adjusted our tuition structure to allow these students to experience a substantial benefit.”

“Colleges and universities across the country are now experiencing second generation college graduates,” Dudley continued. “Parents, who are college graduates themselves, know firsthand the expense of a four-year degree. They are now encouraging their children to stay in school longer, up to five years, and pay more upfront costs instead of taking on large amounts of student loans. This trend is opposite of the once popular trend of racing to finish a degree in four years and paying for it all later. OVU’s tuition change should prove to be a tremendous benefit for today’s college student.”

“The new rates will be really beneficial for me,” OVU senior Tim Rennix said. “As someone who works part-time, I have found that taking 16 credit hours really isn’t feasible. Taking 12 hours instead, and having it cost less, is a break for me. I think one of the biggest advantages of having the base price is that it allows for students to go full-time at 12 hours and pay for 12 hours instead of paying for up to 16, even if we don’t use them.”

Rennix, a triple major in business management, accounting and ministry from Mill Creek, W.Va., also noted that OVU’s tuition restructuring, combined with his part-time work throughout college, will allow him to begin his career with less debt.

Dudley also noted OVU’s housing costs will not increase during the 2007-08 academic year and that the student meal plans have been restructured to provide better value with more meals.

In addition, the university has also implemented a 75 percent reduction in not-for-credit or audited courses beginning in the fall of 2007.

“Our administration recently voted to reduce the audit course fees from $200 per hour to $25 per course for full-time students or $50 per course for part-time students,” Dudley said. “This decision was made to allow for more people within the community to simply take a class for personal improvement. Whether you are a stay-at-home mom or someone who is retired and you simply want to continue to learn – these rates should provide greater opportunities.”
