HEAD MEN'S BASKETBALL COACH

Mike Snell
Mike Snell, Head Men's Basketball Coach (Click for larger picture)Ohio Valley University alumnus Mike Snell returns to us and has taken the reigns of our men's basketball program.  Mike is a coach in the truest sense.  He brings a great deal of experience, leadership, and enthusiasm with him.  He has the student's best interest in mind and is excited to help them grow as a person, as well as an athlete during their collegiate years.

Snell received an Associate of Arts Degree from Ohio Valley in 1983 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from Ohio University in Athens, OH in 1985.  He went on to earn a Master's of Science degree in physical education from Ohio University in 1995.

He has more than 11 years of coaching and teaching experience.  Most recently he served as the assistant men's basketball coach and head men's tennis coach at Marietta College in Marietta, OH.  Prior to that, he was the head men's basketball and tennis coach for Thiel College in Greenville, PA. During his tenure with the Tomcats, Snell tied the school record for most  wins in a season, won the regular season conference title, and earned accolades as the 2003 PAC Men's Basketball Coach of the Year.

In addition, he served in multiple roles as West Libery State College in West Liberty, WV including assistant men's basketball coach, athletic department academic supervisor, adjunct faculty in physical education and business administration, athletic facility supervisor, assistant men's golf coach, and SAAC advisor.

During the 1990s, Snell worked with OVU as an assistant men's basketball coach, as well as an assistant men's basketball coach and head golf coach for Marietta College.

A native of Sardis, OH, Snell and his family currently reside in Bridgeport, OH and attend the National Road Church of Christ in Wheeling, WV.  Snell and his wife, Kristy, have one daughter, Lyndi.


ASSISTANT COACH RICK DOBSON

Rick Dobson starts his first year as Assistant Coach for the Fighting Scots.

Prior to his arrival at Ohio Valley University, Dobson has coached several teams at all levels from Elementary to collegiate level.  Dobson is a Parkersburg native.  He graduated from Campbell University in North Carolina.  He also has attended several colleges and universities throughout his 20 year career as a United States Marine. 

In addition to serving as Ohio Valley University Assistant Basketball Coach he also is the Head Cross Country Coach.

Rick and his wife Tammy reside in Washington, West Virginia, with their three sons Adam, Aaron, and Ty. Adam is an Ohio Valley University graduate and former OVU baseball player. He currently is an Elementary Physical Education teacher at Emerson Elementary School and his wife teaches at Jefferson Elementary School. Aaron is currently a student at Glenville State where he is a member of the basketball team. Ty is a student at Edison Middle School where he is involved in several sports including cross country and basketball.

Dobson believes in God, family, honor, courage, and commitement.

STUDENT ASSISTANT JOSH DERRY

Josh Derry, a native of Cambridge, Ohio, returns for his second season on the bench as a Fighting Scot StudentJosh Derry, click to view larger image Assistant.  Academically, Derry is majoring in both Sports Management and Marketing with plans to attend graduate school to pursue a Master's Degree in Sports Administration.  He would like to enjoy a career as a Coach or Director of Athletics at the collegiate level in the future.

Derry's responsibilities within the program include post player development, off campus recruiting, planning official visits and tryouts on campus, assisting with youth basketball camps, and other team management duties.  Derry has been able to view the game from several points as a player, official, manager, and coach.  He played high school basketball at John Glenn High School in New Concord, Ohio, and upon graduating, worked toward a license to officiate basketbal at the high school level throuh the Ohio High School Athletic Association (OHSAA). 

Derry began his collegiate career as a student manger at Marietta College for the Pioneers, a member school of the Ohio Athletic Conference with an NCAA DIII affiliation.  He served in this position for one year before making the move to Ohio Valley University with Head Coach Mike Snell.  Since arriving at OVU, Derry has worked hard to make the most of his experience while striving to do what he can to better the team in all aspects. 

Derry says of his experience, "I am very appreciative of the opportunity that Coach Snell has given me here at Ohio Valley University.  As a Student Assistant in his program, I have been able to learn many things that will serve me well in my future endeavors.  Every time we hit the court, I am able to learn something new that I can put to use.  This has been a blessing for me, and I am glad to be able to serve this program in any way that I can in order to help the team reach it's full potential."
