Living On Campus FAQ's

Q: When can I move into my room?
A: All residence halls will be open on move-in day at 9 a.m. and University staff will be available to assist students with the check-in process. We ask that you complete your move-in process by 4 p.m. so that you may participate in additional Orientation activities. If you cannot move-in on that day or you know that you won't be done by 4 p.m., please contact Brenda Butterfield so that we may plan for that situation. Also, don't forget that a $35.00 partially refundable deposit is required before you will receive a key.

Q: I don't like my room assignment or my roommate. How can I get a new room or a new roommate?
A: Ohio Valley University has experienced tremendous enrollment growth. Our residence halls are at full capacity, so room and roommate changes for new students are not an option before the start of the semester. However, you may request a room or roommate change after the second week of the semester by talking with your dorm supervisor.

Q: What should I bring with me to Ohio Valley University?
A: Please see the suggested list of things to bring.

Q: What can't I bring with me to Ohio Valley University?
A: Please see the list of prohibited items.

Q: What about telephone service?
A: Each dorm room is equipped with a telephone and each resident has a personal voice mail account. Your phone number will be provided when you move into your room. Only local calls can be made from your dorm room unless you have a calling card.

Q: Are pets allowed in the residence halls?
A: No pets other than fish and turtles kept in aquariums.

Q: Are microwaves allowed in the residence halls?
A: Yes. You might check with your roommate to see who's responsible for bringing it.

Q: What furniture is provided in each room and how are the rooms decorated?
A: A bed (standard twin), dresser, desk, and desk chair are available for each student. Also, each room has an individual thermostat for climate control and a sink. Rooms are carpeted and decorated in neutral colors.

Q: What are the dimensions of the room?
A: Rooms are 17' 10" by 11' 9". Windows measure 49" (w) by 55" (l). Blinds are built into the windows.

Q: Am I allowed to remove the University's furniture from my room?
A: All funiture must remain in the room. A room inventory will be done at the check-in and check-out time for each student.

Q: What about housekeeping services?
A: Community facilities (i.e. bathrooms and laundry) are cleaned daily Monday through Friday. Each student is responsible for cleaning his or her own room and removing trash to the large trash cans located in the residence halls. Students also are responsible for cleaning their own rooms -- vacuums are available through resident assistants (RAs) and the dorm supervisors.

Q: What are quiet hours?
A: Quiet hours are designated times in the residence halls when noise is confined to rooms. These hours promote an environment that is conducive for students to study and sleep. Quiet hours are from 10 p.m. to 8 a.m. on weeknights and midnight to 8 a.m. on weekends.

Q: What is my curfew?
A: If you are a freshman or sophomore and under the age of 21, your curfew is midnight on weekdays and 1 a.m. on weekends. If you are a junior or senior or over the age of 21, you don't have curfew.

Q: Where do I go if I'm locked out of my room?
A: See your dorm supervisor or a resident assistant.

Q: What do I do if I lose my key?
A: See your dorm supervisor or Brenda Butterfield. A $20.00 replacement fee will be charged.

Q: What do I do if I lose my student identification card?
A: See a member of the Student Life team.
