SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE AT OVU

New Courses in Autism Spectrum Disorders Being Offered Now

Courses are designed for teachers who want to add this credential to a special education endorsement.  No additional Praxis II test is required for the Autism Endorsement.
 

From Policy 5202 19.3.2. of the West Virginia Board of Education:   "Additional Endorsement in Autism. - An individual who holds a Professional Teaching Certificate endorsed in Emotional/Behavior Disorders, Multi-Categorical Special Education, Mental Impairment (Mild/Moderate), Severe Disabilities or Pre-School Special Needs or the equivalent to these endorsements as previously defined in this policy may receive an additional endorsement in Autism provided they make application and successfully complete six semester hours of coursework in Autism from a regionally accredited institution as defined in §126-136-4.53."

Course Descriptions:

  • SPED 308 Introduction to Autism Spectrum Disorders (3 credits) This course will explore the autism spectrum disorders, scientific and medical theories, presentation and severity of the different diagnoses considered part of the spectrum, and criteria for diagnosis. Identification of the disorders, age of diagnosis, identifying behaviors and characteristics will be presented. Course discussions and assignments will focus on the research that informs current understanding of the spectrum disorders and on an overview of federal and state law concerning families with children with ASD and placements in schools. This course requires 15 clock hours in field experience in work with students with ASD. Prerequisite or co-requisite: SPED 302.  Offered in fall and summer.

  • SPED 309 Interventions for Autism Spectrum Disorders (3 credits) This course explores the developmental areas of social skills, behavior, and communication, providing an overview of the major educational theories/interventions, including practical approaches and technology that support the communication of students with ASD. Another focus is developing appropriate social skills interventions as they relate to appropriate and ethical classroom practice. Strategies address the impact of the environment on behavior, behavior analysis, positive behavior support, sensory interventions, and daily life therapy. Participants connect strategies and interventions to appropriate instructional and IEP goals and objectives. This course requires 15 clock hours of field experience with students with ASD. Prerequisites: SPED 302, SPED 305, and SPED 308. Offered in spring and summer.

SUMMER 2012 CLASSES
     Begin May 12

SUPER SESSION*:  May 12, 2012 on OVU campus from 9 am to 1 pm

*Students are required to attend this
session prior to beginning classes in order to receive information about field experience requirements, to meet with instructors, and to get training in using Sakai.

IEP Writing Workshop

All students who are enrolled in SPED 305, Program Planning for Special Education, are required to attend the IEP Writing Workshop on campus on a date to be announced.  Participation in this workshop is necessary to receive a final grade in the class.  Students in other Special Education Institute classes are welcome, but not required, to attend.


Multi-categorical Certification Course Offerings** 

All classes are for undergraduate credit.

 I. Required for all special education certifications if not taken in prior certification programs:
• SPED 302 Curriculum and Methods for Behavior Disorders (Without Autism) - 3 credits

     A practical and contemporary study of curriculum methods, materials, and processes involved in meeting the needs of students with behavior disorders.  Twenty hours of field experience are required.    
• SPED 303 Curriculum and Methods for Learning Disabilities - 3 credits
     A practical and contemporary study of curriculum methods, materials and processes involved in meeting the needs of students with learning disabilities.  Twenty hours of field experience are required.    
• SPED 304 Curriculum and Methods for Mental Impairments - 3 credits
     A practical and contemporary study of curriculum methods, materias, and processes involved in meeting the needs of students with mental impairments.  Twenty hours of field experience are required.     
• SPED 305 Program Planning in Special Education - 3 credits (Includes mandatory IEP Saturday Workshop at OVU)
     Study of the delivery system for special education services and appropriate instructional methods, including adapting methods and materials, for teaching students with exceptionalities.     
+SPED 306 Assessment in Special Education - 3 credits
     Development of expertise in various forms of cognitive and effective assessment techniques, understanding psycho-educational needs of exceptional learners, and designing appropriate educational prescriptions from assessment protocols.  Ten hours of field experience are required.    
+SPED 307 Collaboration and Consultation in Special Education - 3 credits
     Consultative, collaborative, and team models for the various roles of students, teachers, and family members in effective special education.  Emphasis on building skills for adapting curriculum, co-teaching, interacting, and reflecting on educational partnerships.  Fifteen hours of field experience are required.   
+EDUC 415 Differentiated Instruction - 1 credit
     This course is for those who need study in differentiated instruction as a foundation for effective work with diverse students, including English-Language Learners, students with special needs, and students with various learning styles.  The course addresses research-based strategies for curriculum and lesson design with focus on assessment of prior knowledge, setting learning goals, planning instruction, assessment of learning, and documenting achievement.  Offered on demand.

II. Required for K-6 special education certifications, 6 hrs reading & 3 hrs math methods, if not taken in prior programs: 
• EDUC 328 Methods of Teaching Reading (K-6) - 3 credits 
     A study designed to acquaint teachers with resources, methods, and materials for teaching reading.  A study of the processes involved in learning and teaching reading with emphasis given to diversity, learning styles, and special needs.  Ten hours of field experience are required.
• EDUC 413 Diagnostic & Prescriptive Reading (K-12) - 3 credits
     A study of assessment and correction of reading problems, their causes, and remediation.  Instruction in use of various diagnostic instruments and using the results to plan remediation.  Ten hours of field experience are required. 
• EDUC 325 Methods of Teaching Math (K-6) - 3 credits
     A study of the philosophy and methods of teaching mathematics to elementary students.  Emphasis will be placed on collecting materials and resources to plan and teach K-6 math lessons for peer and faculty review.  Ten hours of field experience are required.

III. Required for 5-Adult special education certifications, 6 hrs reading & 3 hrs math methods, if not taken in prior programs:
• EDUC 414 Teaching Reading in the Content Area (5-12) - 3 credits
     A study of the skills necessary to teach students in grades 4-12 to read content-area textbooks, to develop intrinsic motivation, critical thinking, study skills, vocabulary, fluency, comprehension strategies, and self monitoring strategies in all students, especially weak readers and English Language Learners.  Ten hours of field experience are required. 
• EDUC 413 Diagnostic & Prescriptive Reading (K-12) - 3 credits

     A study of assessment and correction of reading problems, their causes, and remediation. Instruction in use of various diagnostic instruments and using the results to plan remediation. Ten hours of field experience are required. 
 •MAT 330 Methods of Teaching Math (5-12) - 3 credits

     A study of the philosopy and methodology of teaching mathematics to secondary students.  Emphasis will be placed on higher level math.  Twenty hours of field experience are required.   

**Offered on demand. Additional certification coursework may be mandated by the State.


OVU SPECIAL EDUCATION INSTITUTE

This credential program is approved by the West Virginia Board of Education. Program participants will be eligible for an endorsement in multicategorical special education. This endorsement is added to an existing teaching license. The Institute offers courses in a combination of online and blended formats using the Sakai learning system. Class size is limited to 20. 

RECENT INSTITUTE CHANGES TO NOTE:

1. Courses will be offered at the undergraduate level. 

2. Eligible students will have prior certification in one of the following areas: elementary education or secondary English, math, social studies, general science, biology or reading.

3.  Teachers in other certification areas can achieve certification in special education through an alternative program created by the West Virginia Department of Education.  The alternative program courses are specified in WVBE Policy 5100.  With 21 credit hours in coursework, teachers can gain a foundation in English, math, science, or social studies and then complete a special education certification program.  Please call Jo Pennington at 304-865-6141 for information about this alternative certification program.

4. The grade level of the special education endorsement will correspond with the student's current certificate.  For example, teachers with an elementary education certificate will be eligible to receive the special education endorsement for grades K-6 and teachers with a certificate in secondary education will earn the special education endorsement for grades 5-Adult.

    $300.00 per credit hour*

    $50.00 technology fee per class

*Does not include Praxis test fees or textbooks 

FINANCIAL ARRANGEMENTS:

All financial arrangements must be completed one week before the Super Session. If applying for a loan, the loan must be approved one week before the Super Session. Loans can cover textbooks, fees and tuition. Travel expenses (up to $200) can also be included in your loan.

To pay by credit card, contact Lura Wilcoxen in the business office at 304-865-6078. Checks must be received in the business office one week before the Super Session, and are payable to Ohio Valley University.
