NEW! Fall 2015 - Earth and Space Science

New West Virginia State Board of Education Mandate

According to Policy 2520.3C Next Generation Content Standards and Objectives for Science in West Virginia Schools, Effective July 1, 2016, all ninth-graders will be required to take Earth and Space Science, a course that is a part of the Earth and Space Science objectives for kindergarten through high school.

Become one of the first West Virginia secondary teachers to add certification in earth and space science! You can be ready in fall 2016 when the state’s ninth graders take this course. Your work will assist students in preparing for life and work in the 21st century.

Beginning in August 2015, Ohio Valley University is pleased to offer a teacher certification program in Earth and Space Science Education Grade 5-Adult to assist professional educators in gaining this important credential.

Who Needs this Credential?

  2. Take the Praxis II: 5571 Earth and Space Sciences Content Knowledge test
View the test details. The West Virginia passing score is 147 (per Policy 5100). Look at the test description, including the topics covered, sample questions, and answers with rationale. Also, be sure to examine the NexGen standards. Look closely at those assigned to the new ninth grade Earth & Space Science course before making a decision about earning this certification by passing the Praxis II test. With a passing score on this test, teachers could apply to the West Virginia Department of Education for the additional certification.
  3. Determine specific course needs
If you are a certified teacher but not ready to take and pass the Praxis II: 5571 Earth and Space Sciences Content Knowledge test, contact us to talk about specific courses needed to update knowledge and skills that apply to the specific learning outcomes for this ninth grade course. We will evaluate your transcript(s) to identify the courses already taken and can recommend any other courses that would be helpful. You may not need to complete our certification program, but rather take any course(s) needed to pass the Praxis II:  5571 Earth and Space Sciences Content Knowledge test. With a passing score of 147 on this test, a teacher could apply to the West Virginia Department of Education for the additional certification.
