Creative Ways to Give to OVU
Honor Family or Friends with Named Giving Opportunities
Longtime friends of OVU Gene and Joyce Wharton were honored with the naming of the Gene & Joyce Wharton School of IT & Business in the OVU College of Business.
As a private, faith-based university affiliated with the churches of Christ, tuition only covers a small portion of the cost of an education at OVU and the university relies on private support to close the gap. Private support comes in the form of annual gifts, gifts to grow our endowment, capital gifts and planned giving of life income and estate gifts. In each case, your gift can and should be closely suited to your financial situation, philanthropic interests and tax advantage. The advancement staff encourages you to consult with your tax advisor, accountant, financial planner and/or attorney to determine which method of giving would best suit your circumstances.
Your financial gifts to Ohio Valley University can be given in a variety of ways, including:
- Stocks or Bonds
- Real Estate
- Personal Property
- Matching Gifts from Employers
- Planned Giving (Wills and Gifts by Trust)
- Memorials and Honorariums
Advancement staff members can provide account and routing numbers for stock and other electronic transfers. You may also make gifts via check, credit card, over the phone or online. If you are interested in making a pledge to our current fundraising campaign, our staff is ready to assist you. Regardless of the size of your gift, you will receive written acknowledgment for your tax records.
Importance of Annual Fund Giving
The most critical gift need at Ohio Valley University is for annual scholarships. More scholarships mean more students, and more students translate to more acceptances into medical, professional and graduate schools, and then eventually to more service to the state, the region and the nation.
A charitable investment in scholarships at Ohio Valley University is an investment in leadership and service. Many institutions of higher education have what is called an annual fund giving program. The major difference is that at Ohio Valley, you can know exactly what your "annual gift" is going to fund. Your contribution goes directly to helping another student experience the unique Ohio Valley education.
Your annual unrestricted gifts go directly into the university operating budget to fund the best of an Ohio Valley University education: small classes, superb faculty, scholarships, the latest technology, study abroad programs, internships and other hands-on learning and service opportunities.
A Special Note To Alumni : Many funding agencies request us to share our “alumni giving rate” in the grant application process. That percentage of giving can often be the make-or-break statistic when a major capital, endowment or scholarship grant is hanging in the balance. As an alumnus, your consistent gift each year--regardless of its size--helps ensure that corporations and foundations know Ohio Valley University has the support of a strong, loyal alumni base.
Moreover, OVU is listed regularly in higher education rankings such as U.S. News & World Report. Those rankings take into account that same statistic: our alumni giving rate.
The importance of endowment giving lies in its permanence. It is the university's hedge against future financial challenges. It is an institutional "savings account in perpetuity" which generates a flow of income annually that will always be there.
As a donor, you can elect to establish named endowments to honor or memorialize a loved one while assisting in the support of a cause close to your family's heart. You can
“restrict” or earmark your gifts to fund scholarships, student awards, faculty chairs or professorships, capital construction or building maintenance.
Unrestricted endowment is equally critical, as it provides enduring support for the overall health of the institution. Endowment and other naming gift opportunities often have minimum giving levels required to establish a chair, program or activity.

As Ohio Valley University grows--whether that growth is in buildings, academic programs, the number of students or campus infrastructure--so does the need for capital. Construction and renovation of buildings, new equipment, additional athletic facilities and surface areas and technology enhancements are at the core of meeting the needs of students in a residential, academic setting and keeping pace in a changing world.
As is true with endowed projects and programs, capital projects offer various naming opportunities--for any new facilities being planned or built, for offices, classrooms and auditoriums inside those facilities and for areas such as athletic fields, common gathering spaces and special interest areas such as landscaped gardens and fountains. Such gifts continue to make the difference in the quality of the university programs and in the well-kept beauty of the campus.
