THE OVU GRADUATE SCHOOL OF LEARNING & LEADING

The Master of Education degree in Curriculum and Instruction from the Ohio Valley University Graduate School of Learning and Leading is designed to equip highly qualified teachers at all classroom levels. Courses include advanced studies in research-based practices for teaching and learning, curriculum design, assessment, and current issues in education. The complete program requires a total of 30 credit hours of graduate coursework. The program does not lead to teaching certification.

All students are trained in the use of Sakai, Ohio Valley University’s easy‑to‑use collaborative, online learning environment. This tool helps the student learn, but also provides a high degree of interactivity with fellow students and professors.

WHO SHOULD APPLY?

This program is designed for students who:

  • Need an additional credential for career or salary enhancements

  • Are certified teachers and wish to earn a master’s degree in curriculum and instruction

  • Need a credential to create curriculum or to conduct professional development and/or continuing education opportunities


ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS:

The Graduate School of Learning and Leading encourages prospective students from a wide range of academic interests and backgrounds to apply. The following requirements must be met to gain entry into the program:

  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree or higher with a 2.5 GPA from an accredited institution

  • Submit an online Application for Graduate Admission

  • Submit the following documents as a packet:

    • a $30 application fee. Contact the Business Office

    • An essay of one to two pages addressing your teaching philosophy. Email to: Mara Ashley.

    • Official transcripts from all previous institutions. These may be sent directly from the institutions to the OVU Registrar.

    • Two letters of recommendation that address your capacity to complete the program effectively and to use the additional knowledge to benefit yourself and others. NOTE: These may come from instructors, co‑workers, employers, or clergy, and they should have the authors’ signatures across the flap of the envelope.     • PLEASE NOTE: The deadline to apply for the spring semester is Dec. 1st. The deadline to apply for fall semester is July 15th.

       


TRANSFER OF CREDIT:

A maximum of nine (9) credit hours may be transferred into the Master of Education program. If you have achieved National board Certification in teaching you may also receive transfer credit.

Financial Assistance

Federal financial aid is awarded based upon a variety of factors, but most often on the basis of program and/or demonstrated financial need. Listed below are the common forms of assistance.

FEDERAL EDUCATIONAL LOAN PROGRAM

There are two types of direct Stafford loans. The Federal Direct Subsidized Stafford loan is based on financial need as determined by FAFSA. The Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford loan is given to cover the cost of education when the student exhibits no financial need. Contact us for more information about these loans.

EMPLOYEE REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM

Many school systems/companies offer reimbursement programs for those continuing their education. contact your employer’s personnel office to see if you qualify.
