HLC Frequently Asked Questions
To clarify many recent questions regarding its accreditation status, Ohio Valley University remains accredited by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) while we work to address the issues raised in their June 2020 decision.
QUESTION: What is the Higher Learning Commission?
ANSWER: The Higher Learning Commission accredits approximately 1,000 colleges and universities that have a home base in one of 19 states that reach from West Virginia to Arizona. HLC is a private, nonprofit accrediting agency that is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. Institutions are evaluated based upon a set of standards that they must meet to receive and/or maintain accreditation.
QUESTION: Is Ohio Valley University still accredited?
ANSWER: Yes.
QUESTION: What does it mean “to be placed on Probation?”
ANSWER: Probation is the sanction that is placed on institutions when they are out of compliance with one or more of the HLC Criteria for Accreditation. While on Probation, the University has an opportunity to remedy the issues that led to the sanction.
QUESTION: As a student, how does the Higher Learning Commission action impact me?
ANSWER: Students should see no impact because of this action. Academic programs, athletics, housing, student life, and university functions will not be affected.
QUESTION: As a student, will this impact my financial aid?
ANSWER: No, students will be able to access all federal, state, and local financial aid programs as before and their major is not affected.
QUESTION: What does the action mean to the school?
ANSWER: OVU finances are hindered by both long-term loans made in past years and the current challenges all institutions are facing. While on financial Probation, the HLC will more closely monitor our finances and give guidance. The end result will be that OVU will emerge from Probation in a stronger financial condition.
QUESTION: Will tuition and fees be increased because of this HLC action?
ANSWER: No
QUESTION: Is OVU taking actions to improve our financial picture?
ANSWER: Yes. The conditions of long-term debt are being reconsidered in consultation with the bond holders and emphasis on greater efficiencies is continuing. Our financial profile is constantly improving and the school is operating within its budget.
QUESTION: Will my graduation plans be altered?
ANSWER: No
QUESTION: Will the college credits I earn at OVU still transfer to other schools?
ANSWER: In most cases, there is no problem. However, all colleges and universities define their own transfer and admission policies. Students who plan to transfer should contact any institution they plan to attend in the future so that they are knowledgeable about the admission and transfer policies for that institution.
QUESTION: What is OVU doing to make improvements?
ANSWER: Many things. When school opens for fall 2020 renovations will be completed in the dining area and enhanced dining options will be available. New faculty have been appointed, bringing their talents to our learning environment. Fall will also bring exciting changes in student activities, chapel services, and overall student services.
QUESTION: Will this HLC action interfere with health-related actions connected with the Coronavirus?
ANSWER: No. Plans are in place for best health practices and will be updated as guidelines and recommendations are received from public officials.
