Vienna, W.Va.—Each year, students are given an opportunity to identify OVU personnel who have been effective, Christ-like mentors. At the close of spring semester, OVU students were invited to vote for 2018’s Secret Heroes in three categories: Professor, Adjunct Instructor, and Staff Member. Students considered who had been most helpful to them and their achievements at OVU, especially during the most recent school year. Students were also encouraged to enter comments describing how that person had assisted them in transforming their lives, which is central to the OVU Mission. Multiple announcements and signs on campus encouraged students to participate in the online voting. Names of the three receiving awards were announced in chapel on April 26, Academic Awards Day.
Here are some of the comments from students about those selected in each category:
About Sally Massey-- “started the food cabinet so that no student has to go hungry. She is a huge inspiration to me.”
About Joe Spivy-- “just makes learning great and interesting.”
About Leachelle Moore-- “has been wonderful to me and has made my time at OVU great. She is so caring and lets everyone know they are loved. I love how devoted she is to God and she makes me want to grow my faith to be as strong as hers.”
Award Winner Quotes
The winners were asked, “How does OVU help to fulfill your personal life mission?”
Faculty Hero of the Year
“I enjoy getting to know the students, who they are, and where they come from. Their faith stories are lessons for me and add layers to my faith.”
Staff Member of the Year
“Our family’s personal mission is to be involved with others and my position here allows me to do that. It doesn’t feel like a job to me.”
Adjunct Faculty of the Year
“OVU allows me to work in one of the greatest mission fields in the world. It is a built-in mission field.”
Clearly, the “Secret Heroes” activity is a blessing to those who choose their heroes as well as to those chosen.
